Description

This self-directed training will
familiarize participants with the steps from start to finish in a family law case and provide information about how to bring an emergency motion. Participants will learn about the family court process, including recent reforms and services. This is a skills-development training with most of the focus on participant-directed activities and learning.

This training module does not deal with child protection proceedings.

The content in this training module assumes participants have a good understanding of safety issues in the court setting and how to present evidence about abuse to the court. If you are not familiar with these issues, they are covered by two other trainings offered by Springtide Resources and Luke's Place, called "Presenting Evidence About Abuse" and "Safety During and After Court". All three topics are part of the 8 module training we offer called "After She Leaves: Supporting women through the family court process".

This training consists of audio components (text provided), online documents, links and activities. It was developed by family law expert Pamela Cross of Luke's Place in partnership with Springtide Resources.

Access time

You will have 2 weeks access to the training once your payment has been processed. During this period, you may access the training from any computer that meets the following system requirements.

System Requirements

Internet Connection: A high-speed internet connection is recommended, but not required, for participation in this training. Such a connection will ensure that the audio components (short "lecturettes") of the training are easy to download.

Medium-speed connections, such as those provided by "Rocket Sticks", will be able to access the audio as well, although you may need to wait for the lecturette file to load completely. If the loading of the audio file stalls, refresh the page in your browser and wait 5 minutes for it to fully reload.

If you have a dial-up internet connection, you can refer to the transcripts of the lecturettes which appear on every page that contains an audio file. It is recommended that you do NOT click on the audio file that appears on these pages as that will activate the downloading of the audio file, which will take a very long time with a dial-up connection.

All audio lecturettes are also provided in text format.

Audio: To listen to the lecturettes, a sound card and speakers or headphones are necessary.

Browser: This training is best viewed in the browser Internet Explorer 8 or higher. It will work well in most other browsers as well. If you notice a browser issue, please let us know: [email protected]

Other Programs: To access downloadable PDFs, participants will need Adobe Reader. You may download Abobe Reader for free. Visit: get.adobe.com/reader

To access downloadable MS Word files, you will need MicroSoft Word or a compatible word processing program.
